0:00 Introduction

Hi everyone. I'm a product manager at Databricks. Today, I'm going to walk you through the Genie 1 experience in Google Sheets. At Databricks, we understand the importance of spreadsheet tools to our customers because it helps them solve use cases from ad hoc analysis to financial planning. In this demo, I'll show you how to connect to Genie 1, ask questions about your business in natural language, and ultimately land that data back into Google Sheets to continue your analysis.

So, let's jump into it. For the purposes of this demo, I want you to imagine that I'm a regional manager for retail stores. So, on the right here, I have the Databricks connector for Google Sheets open. In the top right, you can click uh the Genie 1 icon and that'll launch uh the Genie 1 homepage within Google Sheets. In this page, there are really two things that you can accomplish. Uh the first is you can look at previous conversations either by looking under the recents tab or in the top left uh for all of your conversation history.

0:45 Opening the Genie One connector in Google Sheets

So, this provides you an entry point to jump back into previous conversations uh and continue the thread with Genie 1. The other thing that you can do is start a new conversation, uh which is what I'm going to do right now. So, I want to ask uh Genie 1 about the performance of my stores within the West region uh against the targets that we set earlier this year. So, at this time, uh Genie 1 has received the question.

1:28 Asking Genie One a question in Google sheets and reviewing results

It's doing its thinking, which includes uh looking into Unity Catalog at the Genie agents, tables, UC metric views, dashboards, etc. that exist uh and trying to find the best asset that can answer this question. And it's also doing all of this while respecting my particular permissions that I have within Unity Catalog. Perfect. So, now I have an answer here, and let's walk through the parts. So, to start I get this nice table that shows me for the stores within the particular region what the target was versus what the gap was to the target, whether positive or negative.
If I scroll a bit lower, I also can see the SQL statement that was used to generate these insights. If I want to jump into Databricks and do further analysis, I have more insights that I can rely on. And then at the bottom here, I have the list of sources that are included in this answer. And again, this helps me trust the answers, but then also if I want to do further analysis on my own, this provides me a starting place.
So, if I scroll back up to that answer, you'll see the import button here in the top right. And so, this allows me to bring these results directly into Google Sheets so that I can start to build out my spreadsheet file. So, I click import here, and I'll be prompted to name the import. performance And then they'll ask me where I want to land the data, either in a new sheet or a current sheet. So, at this point, it's just pulling in the data into Google Sheets so that I can continue my workflow there.

3:15 Importing data from Genie One into Google Sheets

Perfect. Okay, let me do some quick formatting here. Go back. Turn this into a dollar. Turn this into dollars. Everything adjusted did way. Okay, so if I'm looking at the data here, um I can see that uh the Beverly Center performed very well, uh 203% above target, uh which is uh amazing. So, uh I want to find out more about why the store performed so well to see if we can implement uh some of these practices in other stores.
Okay, so now I have this very in-depth answer uh from Genie One that's walking me through why it thought the uh Beverly Center store performed better. Um so, we have more transactions. Um the running category performed well. Um the campaigns that we were running uh drove a lot of in-store traffic. So, this is really great context for uh when I'm going to ultimately present this information and come up with a set of recommendations for how we should move the business going forward.
Uh so, then you might be asking, "Okay, Toussaint, you have all these insights, you brought all the data into uh Google Sheets, but what if you need to keep that data up to date? Do you have to start a new conversation with Genie every single time uh asking the exact same question to get the insights?" And so, the answer is no, uh and the beauty of Genie One being embedded within the Databricks connector for Google Sheets is that if I close the Genie One interface and go to saved imports, um you'll actually be able to see that we save the query that Genie ran as an import, right?

5:40 Reviewing prior imports

And so, what this allows you to do is over time, when you want to pull the latest data, all you have to do is click the refresh icon here or the refresh all icon in the top and we'll pull in all the latest data based on the query that Genie delivered for you. So, you can get the freshest information without having to go back and ask a new question. So, that's all. I've shown you how you can connect to Genie 1 through the Databricks connector for Google Sheets, how you can ask questions about your business in natural language, and then ultimately land those results uh into Google Sheets.
