Unity Catalog vs Alation

Summary

  • Unity Catalog is the unified governance layer for data and AI built into Databricks. It provides access control, discovery, lineage, auditing and data classification for the assets it governs.
  • Alation is a separate platform, the Alation Intelligence Operating System, that catalogs and governs data across the systems it connects to through connectors. It runs as Alation Cloud Service or as customer-managed software.
  • The two can run together. Alation documents a Databricks Unity Catalog connector that catalogs tables, views and metric views and imports lineage from Unity Catalog system tables.
  • Unity Catalog reaches beyond Databricks compute through Lakehouse Federation, external lineage and the Iceberg REST catalog, so the choice depends on where your data and AI assets live and who needs the catalog.

Unity Catalog vs Alation

Unity Catalog is the governance layer built into Databricks. Alation is a separate platform that catalogs data across the systems it connects to, Databricks included. The practical difference is where each one sits: Unity Catalog governs assets in the platform where they are queried and served, and Alation connects to many sources through its connectors. They are not mutually exclusive, because Alation documents a connector for Databricks Unity Catalog.

What is Unity Catalog?

The Databricks docs describe Unity Catalog as the unified governance layer for data and AI built into Databricks. It covers access control, discovery in Catalog Explorer, lineage, auditing through system tables, data classification, data quality monitoring, data sharing and AI governance. It governs tables, views, volumes, functions and models.

What is Alation?

Alation's products include Alation Data Catalog, which it describes as part of its Intelligence Operating System, plus Alation Data Lineage and Alation Data Governance. Governance includes a Policy Center, Trust Flags that link policies to data, and workflow automation. Alation Cloud Service runs on Alation's servers and is administered by Alation, while customer-managed Alation runs on infrastructure you host.

Unity Catalog vs Alation: how they compare

Capability Unity Catalog Alation
Delivery Built into Databricks Alation Cloud Service, or customer-managed (on-premises)
Source coverage Governs tables, views, volumes, functions and models in Unity Catalog. Lakehouse Federation adds governed, read-only access to external data through foreign catalogs Connectors for relational databases, flat files, BI systems, applications and AI models, plus an Open Connector Framework SDK for less common sources
Access control and audit Privileges, plus attribute-based policies that use governed tags to apply row filters and column masks. Activity is recorded in the system.access.audit table Alation says Alation Data Governance enforces access, policy and compliance across systems and applies row-level access controls and dynamic masking
Discovery Catalog Explorer to browse objects, view schema details and sample data Search and discovery that guides users toward trusted assets
Lineage Captured for queries run on Databricks, to the column level where possible, across notebooks, jobs, dashboards and Lakeflow pipelines. External sources and tools can be registered as external assets Combines connector metadata with SQL log analysis and a query-parsing engine. For Databricks, its connector reads the Unity Catalog lineage system tables
Sensitive data Data Classification automatically classifies and tags tables Catalog Sets classify new data and apply policies
AI governance Governs AI assets such as models Alation lists AI governance, including tracking and documenting AI models

Check each vendor's documentation for what is supported on your specific source systems before you decide.

How Databricks approaches data governance

Because Unity Catalog is built into Databricks, its policies live in the same platform where data is queried. Attribute-based policies come in two types: row filter policies exclude rows from query results, and column mask policies return a masked value. They target data through governed tags and attach at the catalog, schema or table level.
Governance also reaches outside Databricks compute in three documented ways. Lakehouse Federation gives governed, read-only access to external data. External lineage extends the lineage graph by registering upstream sources and downstream tools as external assets. Through the Iceberg REST catalog, supported clients such as Apache Spark and Apache Flink can read Unity Catalog Iceberg tables and Delta tables with Iceberg reads enabled, and can write to managed Iceberg tables.

When does each fit?

Mostly Databricks: Unity Catalog is already part of the platform, so governance, lineage and classification are available without deploying a separate catalog product.
Many non-Databricks sources and BI tools: Alation lists pre-built connectors for databases, BI systems, file systems and applications.
Already running Alation: Connect it to Databricks. The connector extracts metadata and imports lineage from system.access.table_lineage and system.access.column_lineage, and its service account needs access to those system tables.

FAQs

Can I use Unity Catalog and Alation together?

Yes. Alation documents a Databricks Unity Catalog connector that catalogs tables, views and metric views. Lineage extraction runs as a downstream job of metadata extraction.

Does Unity Catalog only govern data inside Databricks?

No. Lakehouse Federation, external lineage and the Iceberg REST catalog extend it to external systems and engines, within the limits each feature documents.

Is Unity Catalog open source?

An open source Unity Catalog project exists under the Apache 2.0 license, with an OpenAPI specification. This page describes Unity Catalog in Databricks.

How does Data Classification work in Unity Catalog?

It scans tables in a catalog and tags sensitive columns. You review detections, then enable automatic tagging. It needs serverless compute and catalog ownership or the MANAGE privilege.
