Which tools simplify data engineering tasks?

Summary

  • Tools simplify data engineering when they take over mechanical work: ordering steps by dependency, retrying failures, processing only new or changed data, enforcing quality rules and provisioning compute.
  • Databricks splits that work across three Lakeflow components: Lakeflow Connect for ingestion, Lakeflow Pipelines for declarative transformation in SQL or Python, and Lakeflow Jobs for orchestration.
  • A pipeline derives its execution order from the datasets you declare, and materialized views refresh incrementally on serverless pipelines when the query supports it.
  • Serverless is the default for new pipelines, and serverless jobs enable autoscaling and Photon automatically.
  • Unity Catalog captures lineage, and system tables record job runs and usage.

Which tools simplify data engineering tasks?

The tools that simplify data engineering take over the mechanical work: ordering steps by dependency, retrying failures, processing only new or changed data, enforcing quality rules and provisioning compute. On Databricks that work is split across three Lakeflow components. Lakeflow Connect ingests from sources, Lakeflow Pipelines transforms data declaratively in SQL or Python, and Lakeflow Jobs schedules and orchestrates tasks. Unity Catalog provides governance and lineage.

What makes a data engineering tool simpler to use?

Dimension Why it matters What to evaluate
Authoring effort Hand-written Spark jobs need code for ordering, incremental logic and recovery. Do you declare datasets and let the tool plan execution? Are SQL and Python both supported?
Dependency handling Dependencies hidden in scripts or schedules are hard to see. Does the tool derive the execution graph from your definitions?
Incremental processing Reprocessing everything on each run wastes compute. Does it process only new or changed data, and say when it can't?
Quality rules Catching bad records early is simpler than fixing them downstream. Can rules run per record, with a choice to warn, drop or fail?
Operations Failures need diagnosis. Are there run history, alerts, retries, partial reruns and lineage?
Compute Sizing clusters is manual work. Is managed compute the default?

How does Databricks simplify data engineering?

Lakeflow Connect for ingestion

Fully-managed connectors build on Lakeflow Pipelines and add source-specific authentication, CDC, edge-case handling, long-term API maintenance, automated retries and automated schema evolution. They cover databases, SaaS applications, files and streaming sources, with community and custom connectors for the rest, and they're in various release states. Lakeflow Connect aims to recover automatically: a failed connector retries with exponential backoff. If an error needs you, such as expired credentials, the connector stores the last cursor position and resumes from there when possible.

Lakeflow Pipelines for transformation

You declare streaming tables and materialized views in SQL or Python. The pipeline analyzes their dependencies, runs steps in order with maximum parallelism, and retries transient failures progressively. Materialized views refresh incrementally on serverless pipelines when the query supports it. AUTO CDC handles SCD Type 1 and Type 2 without manual code for out-of-order events. Expectations apply quality checks per record. Pipeline tables are Delta tables, and pipelines run automatic maintenance, including OPTIMIZE and VACUUM, using predictive optimization.

Lakeflow Jobs for orchestration

A job runs tasks as a graph with dependency conditions. Triggers include schedules, table updates, file arrival and continuous runs. Task types include notebooks, Python scripts, SQL, pipelines, dbt projects, JARs and Run Job, and you can configure tasks to check out source code from a Git repository. Notifications go to email or webhook-based destinations.

Compute and monitoring

Serverless pipelines run on Databricks-managed compute, which removes most infrastructure configuration, and serverless is the default for new pipelines. Serverless compute for jobs enables autoscaling and Photon automatically and is the default compute type for supported task types in workspaces enabled for it. The pipeline event log holds audit logs, data quality checks, progress and lineage information, Unity Catalog lineage traces how data flows, and the system.lakeflow tables record job and pipeline runs.

What does this look like in practice?

Incremental loads. Instead of rebuilding a table nightly, use a streaming table for append-only sources and a materialized view for aggregates, so each update processes new or changed data when it can.
Change tracking. AUTO CDC turns a change feed into current rows (SCD Type 1) or full history (SCD Type 2).
Many teams, one platform. Each team keeps job and pipeline definitions as source files in a Declarative Automation Bundle, deployed to development, staging and production workspaces, with Unity Catalog controlling access to the outputs.

FAQs

Can I move my existing code?

Lakeflow Jobs can run existing notebooks, Python scripts, Python wheels, SQL, JARs and Spark Submit tasks, so orchestration can move first. Moving transformation logic into Lakeflow Pipelines means defining it as streaming tables and materialized views.

What if I use dbt or Airflow?

Jobs has a dbt task for running dbt projects, and Apache Airflow can trigger Databricks jobs through its open source provider, which Databricks doesn't directly support.

How are schema changes in source data handled?

Managed connectors include automated schema evolution. For files, Auto Loader detects new columns. In addNewColumns mode, the default when you don't provide a schema, the stream stops with an UnknownFieldException after the schema is updated, so Databricks recommends configuring it with Lakeflow Jobs to restart automatically.

Can I write custom Python?

Yes. Pipelines support SQL and Python, and you can mix SQL and Python sources in one pipeline. Declare external Python dependencies through the pipeline's Environment settings.

What compute does it run on?

Pipelines run on serverless compute, the default for new pipelines, or on classic compute. Jobs can use serverless compute, classic jobs compute or all-purpose compute.
