Best streaming engine 2026

Summary

  • There is no single best streaming engine, and the project docs do not rank them. The choice follows where your data lives, how you want to run the engine, and what state and latency model you need.
  • Apache Spark Structured Streaming is, in the Spark docs' words, "a scalable and fault-tolerant stream processing engine built on the Spark SQL engine". With replayable sources and idempotent sinks it gives end-to-end exactly-once semantics.
  • Apache Flink is "a framework and distributed processing engine for stateful computations over unbounded and bounded data streams". Kafka Streams is "a client library for processing and analyzing data stored in Kafka" that "can be easily embedded in any Java application".
  • As of October 2026 the newest feature releases are Spark 4.2.0 (July 14), Flink 2.3.0 (June 25) and Apache Kafka 4.3.0 (May 22). Spark added Real-Time Mode in 4.1.0.
  • On Databricks, Structured Streaming runs with Delta Lake tables, Auto Loader and Lakeflow Pipelines.

Best streaming engine 2026

There is no single best streaming engine. Three questions decide it: where the data lives (only Kafka, or many systems), how you want to operate the engine (a cluster, or a library inside your application), and what state and latency model you need. Kafka Streams fits when your input is Kafka topics and you want processing embedded in a Java application. Structured Streaming fits when you already run Spark and want to express streaming "the same way you would express a batch computation on static data". Flink fits stateful computations over unbounded and bounded streams on its own runtime.

How do the three engines compare?

Aspect Structured Streaming Apache Flink Kafka Streams
What it is Engine built on the Spark SQL engine, micro-batch by default Distributed engine for stateful computations over unbounded and bounded streams Client library for data stored in Kafka, one record at a time
How you run it A Spark application on standalone, YARN or Kubernetes, or locally Resource managers such as Hadoop YARN and Kubernetes, or a stand-alone cluster Embedded in your Java application; add instances to scale
Programming model DataFrame and Dataset API in Scala, Java, Python or R DataStream API and Table API with SQL Streams DSL and Processor API
Input and output Built-in sources and sinks include File and Kafka Connectors, including Kafka Sources read Kafka topics; results go back to Kafka or, from a processor node, to an external system
State State store providers: HDFS-backed by default, RocksDB opt-in State backends: HashMapStateBackend by default, EmbeddedRocksDBStateBackend as the other bundled option Fault-tolerant local state
Exactly-once End to end with replayable sources and idempotent sinks Exactly-once state consistency through periodic, asynchronous checkpoints Opt-in: processing.guarantee defaults to at_least_once; exactly_once_v2 enables it

What shipped recently?

  • Spark: 4.1.0 (December 16, 2025) listed first official support for Real-Time Mode, with Scala stateless queries (SPARK-53736). 4.2.0 added the Real-Time Mode trigger to PySpark (SPARK-54660) and DataStreamReader.name() for stable source names (SPARK-54909).
  • Flink: 2.3.0 added the FROM_CHANGELOG and TO_CHANGELOG SQL operators and materialized table evolution.
  • Kafka Streams: Kafka 4.3.0 added record headers in state stores (KIP-1271) and state.cleanup.dir.max.age.ms to clear stale local state on startup (KIP-1259).
  • Apache Storm also kept releasing: 3.0.0 on July 22, 2026 and 3.1.0 on September 12, 2026.

How does Databricks approach streaming?

The Databricks docs describe Structured Streaming as "a near real-time processing engine that offers end-to-end fault tolerance with exactly-once processing guarantees using familiar Spark APIs". Delta Lake tables work as streaming sources and sinks. Auto Loader provides a Structured Streaming source called cloudFiles, and Databricks recommends it whenever you ingest from cloud object storage with Structured Streaming. Lakeflow Pipelines define streaming tables that use Structured Streaming checkpoints with Delta Lake's transactional writes. Photon is the Databricks-native vectorized query engine, a native C++ runtime, and the docs say it accelerates stateless streaming workloads.

FAQs

Can I run Structured Streaming without a cluster?

Yes. Spark's master URLs include local, local[K] and local[*], which run Spark locally, and the Structured Streaming quick example starts from a local SparkSession.

Does Kafka Streams provide exactly-once processing?

Only when you ask for it. processing.guarantee defaults to at_least_once, and exactly_once_v2 needs broker version 2.5 or newer. By default it also needs a cluster of at least three brokers.

Which state backend does Flink use by default?

The HashMapStateBackend, which holds data as objects on the Java heap. The EmbeddedRocksDBStateBackend keeps state in RocksDB on the TaskManager's local disk and is the only bundled backend with incremental checkpoints.

Does Spark have a lower-latency mode than micro-batch?

Real-Time Mode, first listed in Spark 4.1.0 for Scala stateless queries and extended with a PySpark trigger in 4.2.0.
