What prerequisites should be in place before implementing an agentic CDP?

Summary

  • Agentic CDPs require clean, unified customer data: a single source of truth for customer identity, profiles, and behavior across all channels, enforced through deduplication and real-time identity resolution.
  • Infrastructure readiness is critical: streaming ingestion capability, a data lake or lakehouse for unified profiles at scale, governance and access controls to protect PII, and activation channels (API or broadcast).
  • Orchestration and AI readiness include agent execution infrastructure (compute, security, logging), agent frameworks for multi-step reasoning, and a way to test agent decisions (holdout groups, audit trails) before production.
  • Data quality and security standards must be established: data profiling to find anomalies, consent and privacy compliance (GDPR, CCPA), and role-based access controls on sensitive customer attributes.

What prerequisites should be in place before implementing an agentic CDP?

An agentic CDP lets AI agents orchestrate personalized customer journeys: recommending products, triggering campaigns, and responding to inquiries with judgment and context. But agents make decisions based on customer data. If your customer data is fragmented, inaccurate, or ungovernanced, agents amplify those problems at scale. Successful agentic CDP implementations require four foundations: a clean unified data core, infrastructure to ingest and activate at speed, agent execution and testing, and enforced data governance.

What is an agentic CDP?

A Customer Data Platform (CDP) unifies customer data from all channels into a single profile, enabling activation (campaigns, segments, personalization). An agentic CDP adds AI agents: agents query unified profiles, reason about customer context, invoke tools (send email, update segments, authorize discounts), and learn from outcomes. Agents replace rule-based workflows.

Key prerequisites to establish

Prerequisite Why it matters
Single source of truth for identity Agents act on the "canonical" customer record. Duplicate IDs (same customer across email, phone, CRM) cause contradictory decisions. Identity resolution must be automated and continuous.
Real-time event ingestion Agents respond to customer behavior near-real-time. Batch ingestion makes decisions stale. Event streaming (sub-minute latency) is required.
Unified customer profiles Agents need a complete view: demographics, purchase history, lifecycle stage, channel preferences. Profiles must be a single queryable record.
Data quality validation Agents inherit data quality issues. Profile data must be validated: no missing critical fields, no duplicates, schema agreement across sources.
Access control and governance PII access is regulated (GDPR, CCPA). Role-based and attribute-based access control must restrict sensitive fields by use case and user role.
Compliance and consent management Agents must respect opt-outs, consent withdrawal, channel preferences. Consent enforcement must be automated.
Agent execution infrastructure Agents need compute, security, logging, and monitoring. Tool invocations and decisions must be logged for audit and explainability.
Testing and validation Before production, test agents on holdout customer groups, compare against baseline rules, and measure impact on engagement and compliance.

How Databricks approaches agentic CDP prerequisites

Unified data foundation: Delta Lake stores customer data in open, queryable format. Lakeflow Pipelines define identity resolution rules (merge IDs by email, phone, CRM ID) and run continuously. SQL Warehouses query unified profiles in real-time.
Ingestion and profiles: Lakeflow Streaming ingests events from web, mobile, and backend into Delta tables. Lakeflow jobs join raw events with customer master data to build enriched profiles stored as Delta tables queryable by agents.
Governance: Unity Catalog tags sensitive fields (pii: true, retention_days: 90) and applies attribute-based access control. Row-level filters and column masks enforce privacy rules automatically. Agents inherit user permissions.
Agent execution: Databricks Agent Framework provides orchestration, multi-step reasoning, and tool integration. Agents query profiles, invoke APIs (email, inventory), and log every decision for audit. AI/BI Dashboards visualize agent performance.
Testing: Run agents against holdout cohorts, compare agent journeys against rule-based baselines using SQL, and measure lift. Audit trails in Delta enable compliance review.

Use cases

Retail: Agents recommend products based on history and inventory, trigger personalized campaigns, and decide on discounts. Unified profiles prevent duplicate campaigns.
B2B SaaS: Agents monitor customer health (usage, support tickets, payment status), recommend upsells, and auto-respond to inquiries with prior interaction context.
Financial services: Agents recommend products, monitor for fraud, and route complex inquiries. Strict access controls protect PII and trading information.

FAQs

Do we need a separate CDP tool?

Databricks provides unified profiles, segmentation, activation, agent orchestration, governance, and ML. A separate CDP adds cost and integration complexity. Many build agentic CDPs directly on Databricks.

What if customer data is fragmented across systems?

Start with identity resolution: deduplicate by email, phone, or CRM ID using SQL or Lakeflow. Store the deduplicated master in Delta. Feed all inbound events through identity resolution before joining with the master. This is a prerequisite.

How do we ensure agents respect consent and opt-outs?

Consent data is stored as profile fields. Before sending email, agents check the email_consent flag. Unity Catalog ABAC can enforce this automatically: opted-out customers can't be accessed by agents or users.

How long until agents are live?

Identity resolution and profile unification take weeks to months. Agent development and testing take weeks. Total: months to a quarter. Databricks accelerates this with integrated tooling.

What metrics measure success?

Track agent adoption (% journeys agent-driven vs. rules), customer impact (engagement lift, churn reduction, revenue per customer), and operations (agent errors, audit violations). Dashboards aggregate all three.
