Genie vs Perplexity

Summary

  • Genie and Perplexity can both answer natural-language questions with cited sources, but they start from different places. A Genie Agent converts a question into SQL over annotated tables and columns registered to Unity Catalog. Perplexity's developer documentation centers on answers grounded in real-time web search with inline citations.
  • Genie One chat first looks for a matching Genie Agent, then for relevant data assets. It also accepts uploaded files, and in Beta it can search the public web and link the sources it uses.
  • Perplexity's documentation describes four APIs: Orchestrator, Agent, Search, and Embeddings. The Agent API also accepts documents in PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, and RTF formats.
  • Genie is grounded in your organization's data and governed through Unity Catalog. Genie Ontology snippets (Public Preview) are gated by Unity Catalog permissions.
  • Genie One and Genie Agents are generally available. Web search in Genie One is Beta, and a workspace admin must turn it on.

Genie vs Perplexity

Genie answers questions about data that your organization governs in Unity Catalog. Perplexity's documentation describes answers grounded in real-time web search, with citations. The two overlap in places: Genie One can search the public web (Beta) and link the sources it uses, and Perplexity's Agent API accepts documents. Genie is designed for questions about governed data, and Perplexity's documentation is built around web search.

What is Perplexity?

Perplexity's developer documentation describes "real-time, web-wide research and Q&A capabilities" delivered through four APIs. The Agent API returns web-grounded answers with built-in citations in one call, and its web search tool grounds answers in real-time web search with inline citations. The Search API returns raw, ranked web results with domain, language, and region controls. This page draws on that developer documentation, so check Perplexity's own site for its other products and plans.

What is Genie?

Genie is the Databricks AI experience for users. It gives every user in your organization a single place to ask data questions in natural language, explore AI/BI dashboards, and run Databricks Apps. All Genie products are grounded in your organization's data and governed through Unity Catalog.
A Genie Agent is a domain-specific natural-language chat interface where users ask questions of their data and get back SQL queries, results tables, and visualizations. It is based on data registered to Unity Catalog, including managed tables, external tables, foreign tables, views, metric views, and materialized views. Chat in Genie One searches available Genie Agents for a relevant one. If none matches, it searches for relevant data assets.

How does Genie handle questions that go beyond your tables?

Genie One can search the public web to answer questions that need current information, such as recent releases, third-party documentation, or news. This is Beta: a workspace admin must turn on Web search in Genie Code and Genie One from the Previews page. Genie One decides when to search based on your request and cites the sources it uses, and each source appears as a link. Web search needs partner-powered AI features and an eligible geo (Americas or Europe) or cross-geography processing. For workspaces with the compliance security profile, it is supported only for HIPAA.
Agent mode in Genie Agents, generally available since July 2026, creates a research plan, runs multiple SQL queries, and delivers reports with citations, visualizations, and supporting tables. Genie Ontology (Public Preview) gives Genie One and Genie Code a shared business-aware map of your organization, and you can see which knowledge sources Genie used in a response.
