Find simple software for data processing.

Summary

  • Simple data processing software takes over the mechanics: ordering steps, retrying failures, sizing compute and recording lineage. Check each before you compare features.
  • Match the authoring style to the team. Databricks offers a visual canvas (Lakeflow Designer), materialized views and streaming tables created with SQL, and declarative SQL and Python pipelines (Lakeflow Pipelines).
  • Lakeflow Pipelines orders steps by dependency, runs them in parallel where it can, and retries transient failures from the Spark task to the flow to the whole pipeline.
  • Lakeflow Jobs chains tasks and starts runs on a schedule, a table update, file arrival or continuously, and can notify you by email or webhook.
  • Serverless compute is the default for new pipelines, and Unity Catalog records lineage.

Find simple software for data processing.

Simple data processing software describes the result you want and handles the mechanics: ordering steps, retrying failures, sizing compute and recording where data came from. Simple doesn't mean basic. It should still cover batch and streaming, data quality rules and governance, and let each person work in the style they know. On Databricks that means a visual canvas for analysts, SQL for people who write queries, and declarative SQL and Python pipelines for engineers.

What should simple data processing software do?

Capability Why it matters
Choice of authoring style Analysts, SQL users and engineers each need a path, without three separate tools.
Dependency handling You declare the datasets and the tool orders and parallelizes the steps.
Failure handling Retries, reruns of only the failed work, and alerts reduce manual recovery.
Flexible triggers Runs start on a schedule, when new data arrives, or continuously.
Data quality rules Rules run inside the pipeline and say what happens to bad records.
Managed compute Nobody sizes clusters by hand.
Lineage You can trace a table back to its sources when something looks wrong.
Usage reporting Cost by job or pipeline is something you can query.

How does Databricks keep data processing simple?

Three ways to author

Lakeflow Designer is a visual, no-code canvas for preparing and transforming data. It reached general availability on June 16, 2026, and every transformation is backed by code, so you can version files in Git and schedule them as jobs. Standalone materialized views are created with SQL from a Databricks SQL warehouse, and Databricks creates a serverless pipeline to process each one. Lakeflow Pipelines is the declarative framework in SQL and Python for batch and streaming pipelines, and serverless is the default for new pipelines.

Dependencies, retries and quality

A pipeline analyzes the dependencies between the datasets you define and orchestrates their order and parallelism. It retries transient failures progressively, from the Spark task to the flow to the entire pipeline. For updates started from Jobs or the Pipelines API, it also restarts the cluster for specific recoverable errors and shuts the cluster down as soon as the run completes. Expectations validate records as they flow through: the default action warns and keeps them, and you can drop invalid records or fail the update.

Orchestration with Lakeflow Jobs

A job holds one or more tasks, such as notebooks, Python scripts, SQL, pipelines, dbt projects or JARs, arranged as a graph. By default a task runs only after the tasks it depends on succeed, and If/else and For each tasks add branching and looping. Triggers include schedules, source table updates, file arrival in a Unity Catalog storage location, and continuous runs. Most job configurations don't retry failed tasks unless you set a retry policy, although serverless jobs auto-optimize retries by default. After a failure in a multi-task job, a repair run re-runs only the unsuccessful tasks and their dependents. Tasks aren't made idempotent for you, so check what a task writes first.

Alerts, lineage and usage

Jobs can notify by email or webhook-based destinations such as Slack and PagerDuty when a run starts, succeeds, fails or runs slowly. Pipelines can send email on success or failure. Unity Catalog captures lineage automatically for supported queries, down to the column level. system.billing.usage records usage with usage_metadata fields such as job_id and dlt_pipeline_id, and the system.lakeflow schema records jobs, tasks, runs and pipeline updates.

When does this fit?

Nightly loads. A scheduled job runs a pipeline that ingests files with Auto Loader into a streaming table and refreshes a materialized view, and it notifies the team if the run fails.
Event-driven runs. A job with a file arrival trigger starts when new files land in a Unity Catalog storage location.
Analyst-built prep. An analyst builds a visual data prep, previews each step, and schedules it as a job.

FAQs

Do we need data engineers?

Not for every workload. Analysts can build visual data preps without writing code, and SQL users can create materialized views from a Databricks SQL warehouse. For custom sources, testing and deployment, Declarative Automation Bundles describe jobs and pipelines as source files for source control, code review and CI/CD.

What if data doesn't arrive on a schedule?

Use a file arrival or table update trigger on a job, or run a continuous pipeline. Databricks recommends running continuous pipelines with a continuous job rather than the pipeline's built-in continuous mode.

Does it connect to our databases and SaaS applications?

Lakeflow Connect offers managed connectors for databases, SaaS applications, files and streaming sources, plus community and custom connectors for sources without one. Connectors are in various release states, so check each one. Message buses such as Kafka are read directly as Structured Streaming sources in pipelines.
