What is easier to ingest data into? Databricks or Snowflake?

Summary

  • Neither platform is easier in every situation. Both offer UI file upload, continuous loading from cloud storage, push-based streaming APIs, managed connectors for SaaS applications, and change data capture (CDC) from databases.
  • On Databricks, Lakeflow Connect provides managed connectors, Auto Loader loads new files from cloud storage incrementally, and Zerobus Ingest lets producers push records straight into Unity Catalog Delta tables.
  • On Snowflake, COPY INTO handles bulk loads, Snowpipe loads files continuously as they arrive in a stage, Snowpipe Streaming writes rows directly to tables, and Openflow connectors ingest from databases and SaaS applications.
  • Ease depends on your sources, the connector stage for each one, where the data must land, how you'll transform it afterward, and who maintains the pipelines.
  • Score each platform on your own source list: connector availability, lifecycle stage and setup.

What is easier to ingest data into? Databricks or Snowflake?

There's no single answer, because both platforms cover the same ingestion patterns: file upload, continuous file loading, streaming, SaaS connectors and database CDC. What decides ease for your team is fit. Check whether a managed connector exists for each of your sources and what stage it's in, how much setup each source needs, and whether ingestion, transformation and governance sit in one place. We believe Databricks is a strong fit when you want ingestion to land directly in Unity Catalog and flow into Spark Declarative Pipelines (SDP) on the same platform. Evaluate both on your own source list.

How to judge ingestion ease for your situation

Criterion What to check
Source coverage Is there a managed connector for each source, or will you build and maintain a custom pipeline?
Lifecycle stage Is each connector GA, Public Preview or Beta, and does it need account-team enablement?
Setup Does a source need a gateway, change tracking enabled on the database, event notifications on a bucket, or OAuth sign-in?
Freshness model Do you need scheduled batches, continuous file loading, or row-level streaming?
Schema changes How are new columns handled when the source changes?
After the load Where do transformations, data quality checks and orchestration run once data lands?
Operations Where do you monitor runs, retries and failures, and can you deploy pipelines as code?

Databricks vs Snowflake: ingestion options compared

Option Databricks Snowflake
UI file upload Upload CSV, TSV, JSON, Avro, Parquet or text files to create or overwrite a managed Delta table Upload CSV, TSV, JSON, Avro, ORC, Parquet or XML files from your computer or a stage through Snowsight (XML can't create a new table)
Bulk file loads COPY INTO, or CREATE STREAMING TABLE, which Databricks recommends for SQL users COPY INTO <table> from internal or external stages, run on a virtual warehouse you size
Continuous file loading Auto Loader processes new files as they arrive in S3, ADLS, GCS or Unity Catalog volumes Snowpipe runs a pipe's COPY INTO for each new file on serverless compute, triggered by cloud event notifications or the REST API
Push-based streaming Zerobus Ingest: SDKs for Python, Java, Rust, Go and TypeScript, plus a REST API Snowpipe Streaming: Java, Python and Node.js SDKs, plus a REST API
Apache Kafka Managed Kafka connector (Beta), or SDP and Structured Streaming with a Kafka source Snowflake Connector for Kafka, built on Snowpipe Streaming, and an Openflow Connector for Kafka
Database CDC Lakeflow Connect: SQL Server (GA), PostgreSQL and MySQL (Public Preview), Oracle (Beta) Openflow connectors for MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle and SQL Server
SaaS applications Lakeflow Connect managed SaaS connectors, each handling authentication, incremental reads, schema evolution and retries Openflow connectors for SaaS platforms
Schema evolution Auto Loader infers schemas and evolves them as new columns appear Set ENABLE_SCHEMA_EVOLUTION on a table to add new columns automatically
Transform after landing SDP streaming tables and materialized views Dynamic tables, or streams and tasks

How Databricks approaches ingestion

Databricks recommends starting with the most managed option. Lakeflow Connect managed connectors sit at the top. Each SaaS connector handles source-specific authentication, incremental reads, schema evolution and automated retries, and writes streaming tables governed by Unity Catalog. Database connectors use CDC through an ingestion gateway. Each schedule you add creates a Lakeflow Jobs job.
Files and events have their own paths. Auto Loader tracks discovered files in its checkpoint, so each file is processed exactly once and the stream resumes after a failure. Zerobus Ingest, which is generally available, is a push-based API: create a table, then push records to it, with no message bus to run.
Connector stages vary, so check each source before you commit. The SQL Server connector is GA, and the PostgreSQL and MySQL connectors are in Public Preview, with access requested through your Databricks account team.

FAQs

Which platform is easier to ingest data into, Snowflake or Databricks?

It depends on your sources and team. Both provide UI upload, continuous file loading, streaming APIs, SaaS connectors and database CDC, so compare connector coverage, lifecycle stage and setup for your own source systems.

Do both platforms load files continuously without a schedule?

Yes. Databricks Auto Loader processes new files as they arrive in cloud storage. Snowflake Snowpipe loads files as they arrive in a stage, using serverless compute that Snowflake provides.

Can I stream rows without running Kafka?

Yes, on both. Zerobus Ingest pushes records directly into Unity Catalog Delta tables. Snowpipe Streaming writes rows directly to Snowflake tables without staging files.

Is Snowflake Openflow available in every account?

Snowflake's documentation states that Openflow Snowflake Deployments are available to all accounts in AWS, Azure and GCP commercial regions. It also notes that Openflow isn't automatically available in trial accounts.
