How do I use Claude Code to write and run machine learning training jobs?

Summary

  • Claude Code (Anthropic's agent) integrates with Databricks CLI and MCP to scaffold, deploy, and monitor training jobs
  • You describe your ML workflow in natural language; Claude Code generates training code and interacts with Databricks to submit jobs
  • Training runs on Databricks infrastructure and results are logged to MLflow for tracking and governance

How do I use Claude Code to write and run machine learning training jobs?

Yes. Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent, can work with Databricks to author and deploy ML training jobs. You describe your training goal in natural language to Claude Code; it generates training scripts in Python, uses the Databricks CLI or Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect to your workspace, and can submit jobs to run on Databricks Lakeflow Jobs or clusters. Training runs are logged to MLflow, and you can query progress and results through Databricks APIs that Claude Code can invoke.

What is Claude Code?

Claude Code (from Anthropic) is an AI agent that writes, edits, and executes code within your development environment. It understands your intent, reasons about tool dependencies and APIs, and can interact with external services via CLIs and SDKs. Claude Code plans multi-step workflows and can invoke tools autonomously (subject to your approval).

Key capabilities to evaluate

Capability Why it matters
Natural language to code generation You describe your training pipeline; Claude Code generates production-ready Python with data loading, model training, and logging
Databricks CLI / MCP integration Claude Code can execute Databricks CLI commands to submit jobs, query status, or retrieve artifacts from your workspace
Multi-step workflow reasoning Claude Code understands that ML requires feature prep, training, evaluation, and model registration; it orchestrates all steps
Error handling and debugging If a job fails, Claude Code can inspect logs, diagnose root causes, and suggest fixes or regenerate code
MLflow integration Training metrics and models are logged to MLflow automatically, enabling reproducibility and audit trails

How the workflow works

You start Claude Code with access to your Databricks workspace credentials. You ask Claude Code to "train a classifier on customer churn data and register the model in the catalog." Claude Code reasons through the steps: authenticate to Databricks, read feature definitions from Unity Catalog, prepare training data, train the model, evaluate it, and register it using MLflow APIs. For each step, it writes code and, if configured to do so, executes commands via the Databricks CLI or MCP to check job status or retrieve data.
Claude Code can scaffold a training job and submit it to Lakeflow Jobs for orchestrated execution. You provide a job configuration (schedule, compute resources, etc.); Claude Code generates the training notebook or script, uploads it to your workspace, creates the job definition, and submits it. The job runs on Databricks' serverless or dedicated compute, logs to MLflow, and Claude Code can monitor progress by querying the Databricks API.
Because Claude Code is running within Anthropic's environment (or your local machine), it uses Databricks Foundation Model APIs if you want to call Claude models as part of your training pipeline. For example, you might use Claude to generate synthetic training data, score predictions, or interpret model explanations. Those calls route through your Databricks workspace and are billed on your account.
The full workflow remains governed by Unity Catalog: data access, feature retrieval, and model registration all respect your workspace's policies and audit logs.

Use cases

  • Rapid prototyping: A data scientist tells Claude Code to "build a regression model predicting house prices using publicly available housing data." Claude Code generates a notebook with EDA, feature engineering, model training, and cross-validation. It submits the job to Lakeflow Jobs and returns a link to the MLflow run for inspection.
  • Automated retraining: A user configures Claude Code with recurring access to Databricks. They ask it to "retrain the churn classifier weekly using the latest features from the feature store and promote to production if accuracy improves." Claude Code generates a retraining job, submits it to Lakeflow Jobs, and checks MLflow metrics to decide whether to promote.
  • Multi-model experimentation: A team asks Claude Code to "train scikit-learn, XGBoost, and LightGBM models and compare performance." Claude Code generates three training scripts, submits them as parallel Lakeflow Jobs, aggregates results from MLflow, and reports the winner.
  • Data quality debugging: When a deployed model begins to underperform, Claude Code is asked to inspect recent data. It queries recent data from Databricks using the CLI, compares it to training data distributions using Python, flags anomalies, and suggests either retraining or data cleaning.

FAQs

Is my training data safe with Claude Code?

Claude Code runs code locally or within Anthropic's environment using credentials you provide. It does not send training data to Anthropic; it only submits commands via the Databricks CLI or MCP to read data from your workspace. All data stays within your Databricks lakehouse and is governed by Unity Catalog policies.

Can Claude Code handle custom frameworks?

Yes. You can show Claude Code example code using your preferred framework (PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, etc.), and it will use that as a pattern for generated training scripts. You can also provide Claude Code with documentation or GitHub links to guide its code generation.

How does Claude Code interact with Lakeflow Jobs?

Claude Code invokes the Databricks CLI to create job definitions, submit jobs, and poll for completion. It can also query job run history and logs through the API. You can configure Claude Code to ask for approval before submitting jobs or modifying your workspace.

Can I use Claude models within my training pipeline?

Yes. If you have access to Databricks Foundation Model APIs, your training code can call Claude models to generate synthetic data, score or interpret predictions, or augment training data. Those calls route through your Databricks workspace and are billed at Foundation Model API rates.

What happens if Claude Code generates incorrect training code?

You review the generated code before submission. If you spot issues, you can ask Claude Code to revise. You can also inspect job logs after execution to verify behavior. MLflow logs preserve the exact code and parameters used, enabling reproducibility and debugging.
