Is Apache Spark still relevant in 2026?
Summary
- The Spark 4 line has shipped 4.0.0 (May 23, 2025), 4.1.0 (December 16, 2025) and 4.2.0 (July 14, 2026), with point releases continuing.
- Those releases added ANSI SQL mode by default, the VARIANT type, SQL pipe syntax, Spark Declarative Pipelines, Real-time Mode in Structured Streaming, geospatial types and Change Data Capture.
- Spark describes itself as a unified analytics engine for large-scale data processing. DuckDB, Polars, Flink, Kafka Streams, Ray and Dask each describe a different scope.
- Delta Lake and Iceberg both have Spark connectors, and the Databricks Runtime release notes list Spark 4.0.0 in 17.3 LTS and Spark 4.1.0 in 18 LTS.
- Spark 4 dropped Scala 2.12, JDK 8 and 11 and Python 3.8, so upgrades need testing.
Is Apache Spark still relevant in 2026?
Going by the project's own record, yes. The Apache Spark docs describe Spark as a unified analytics engine for large-scale data processing, and the Spark site says thousands of companies use it. The Spark 4 line has shipped 4.0.0 (May 23, 2025), 4.1.0 (December 16, 2025) and 4.2.0 (July 14, 2026), and the Spark news page lists 4.1.3 and 4.0.4 point releases on July 15, 2026.
What did recent Spark releases add?
| Release | Date | Highlights from the release notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spark 4.0.0 | May 23, 2025 | ANSI SQL mode on by default, VARIANT data type, SQL pipe syntax, Python Data Source API, Spark Connect enhancements |
| Spark 4.1.0 | December 16, 2025 | Spark Declarative Pipelines, Real-time Mode in Structured Streaming (Scala stateless support), SQL Scripting and VARIANT GA, JDBC driver for Spark Connect, Python Arrow UDFs |
| Spark 4.2.0 | July 14, 2026 | GEOMETRY and GEOGRAPHY types, Change Data Capture, Arrow-optimized Python UDFs by default, metric views, Real-time Mode trigger in PySpark, Java 25 |
Upgrading from Spark 3 takes testing. Spark 4.0 made Scala 2.13 and JDK 17 the defaults, dropped Scala 2.12, JDK 8 and 11 and Python 3.8, and turned on ANSI SQL mode by default. The 4.2 docs list Java 17, 21 and 25, Scala 2.13, Python 3.10+ and R 4.0+ (Deprecated).
Where does Spark sit next to other tools?
Each row below is the project's own description, not a ranking.
| Project | How it describes itself |
|---|---|
| Apache Spark | A unified analytics engine for large-scale data processing, with Python, SQL, Scala, Java and R APIs, run locally or on standalone, YARN or Kubernetes clusters |
| DuckDB | A SQL OLAP database management system that you can deploy "from edge devices to servers with hundreds of cores" |
| Polars | A DataFrame library for manipulating structured data, written in Rust, with a streaming API that avoids holding all data in memory |
| Apache Flink | A framework and distributed processing engine for stateful computations over unbounded and bounded data streams |
| Kafka Streams | A client library for building applications and microservices where input and output data are stored in Kafka clusters |
| Ray | A framework to build and scale ML and Python applications |
| Dask | A Python library for parallel and distributed computing |
Scopes overlap in places. Flink's site lists stream and batch analytics among its use cases. Structured Streaming provides end-to-end exactly-once semantics when sources are replayable and sinks are idempotent, and Spark 4.1 added Real-time Mode. Test candidates against your own data volume, latency target and operations setup rather than relying on a general ranking.
What does the surrounding ecosystem look like?
Delta Lake is an open source project for building a Lakehouse architecture on top of data lakes, with connectors for engines including Apache Spark and Apache Flink. Iceberg maintains connectors for Spark, Flink and Hive in its main repository. The Spark docs list Spark SQL, pandas API on Spark, MLlib, GraphX and Structured Streaming as built-in higher-level tools. MLlib is Spark's machine learning library, and the DataFrame-based spark.ml package is its primary API.
The Databricks Runtime release notes list Databricks Runtime 17.3 LTS with Apache Spark 4.0.0, 18 LTS with Apache Spark 4.1.0 and 19 with Apache Spark 4.2.0.
FAQs
Should I move from Spark to DuckDB or Polars?
They have different scopes. DuckDB describes itself as a SQL OLAP database that runs from edge devices to servers with hundreds of cores. Polars is a DataFrame library with a streaming API for data that does not fit in memory. Spark runs locally or on clusters, and the Spark site says you can train machine learning algorithms on a laptop and use the same code on clusters. Test with your own workload.
How do Flink and Kafka Streams relate to Structured Streaming?
Flink lists event-driven applications, stream and batch analytics, and data pipelines as its use cases. Kafka Streams needs no separate processing cluster and works with data stored in Kafka clusters. Structured Streaming treats a live data stream as a table that is being continuously appended, a model very similar to batch processing.
What about Ray and Dask?
Ray's libraries include Ray Data, Ray Train, Ray Tune, Ray Serve and RLlib. Dask offers DataFrame, Array, Bag and Futures collections. Spark's own machine learning library is MLlib.
Which Spark version is current?
Spark 4.2.0, released July 14, 2026, is the newest release on the Spark news page.
